An exhibition of new pencil drawings by Rebecca Swainston
Reading, Berkshire, UK, February 3rd 2012, Rebecca Swainston exhibits a new collection of pencil drawings at The Modern Artists Gallery. In a departure from her usual medium of richly coloured paints, Rebecca has transported her figurative style to large scale pencil drawings.
In these drawings Swainston has explored the theme Imaginary Friends. In these we see female figures as well as animals and sometimes made-up creatures. These creatures all hold the expressive powers we expect from Swainston’s images and each drawing invites the viewer to wonder and perhaps speculate about their inner world, their history, thoughts, feelings and intentions.
The pencil drawings, sometimes combined with collage, pen and paint are detailed but bold in their imagery and content. A girl stands strong though slightly awkward in her too big dress while a cat walks up her arm in a way which makes us question its reality. In another image a Marabou Stork, a creature known for its opportunistic and sometimes aggressive nature sits askew and a little vulnerable. Another image shows Persephone in stark profile while the pomegranates, which represent both her undoing and which are a symbol of fecundity, are seen within her form.
These are just a few of the richly imagined and unique scenarios, which spring from the artist’s imaginings. The variety and range of visual language within these powerful works shows Swainston’s mastery of this most immediate, fundamental and captivating art form and make this an exhibition which should not be missed.
The exhibition runs from February 4th until February 18th 2012.
