WELL KNOWN US ARTIST BROKEN CROW DEPORTED FROM UK
Added: (Fri Aug 29 2008)
It’s not as easy to get into this country than you might think. This morning the Minneapolis stencil artist Broken Crow from was taken from a detention centre and flown back to his native US after being denied access to the UK where he is to show a collection of his original work at urban art gallery, Ink_d in Brighton.
He arrived at Heathrow on Thursday with the artwork for a limited edition piece that the gallery were planning to print as a special edition for the show which opens next Thursday night. Officials told the artist he needed a work permit and despite lengthy negotiations, immigration officers denied him entry and he was taken to a detention centre to await a flight home.
Dan Hipkin, studio director comments “We are shocked at Broken Crow’s deportation and were looking forward to seeing him in the gallery today along with C215. It’s hard to believe and I hope we can work together to get him back as soon as possible.”
Broken Crow’s work is a seminal part of Stencil History X, an exhibition which brings together a number of American, French and British stencil artists under one roof to celebrate a diverse art form. His work focuses on big murals, giant stencils in bright colour, drawing inspiration from comic books, mythology and the vast world between stained glass windows and graffiti.
Stencil History X opens to the public at Ink_d on Friday, 5th September.
