A poem for Remembrance Day by Kathleen Ross (1916- )
HEROES (NOVEMBER 11TH, REMEMBRANCE DAY)
The artist says,
Now, we live in a monstrous Age -
Not in flowers -
But they, they
Feed the Spirit
of a future Time,
Through their example -
And their
Sacrifice -
They conquered the hobgoblins,
And the dervishes,
The nightmare monsters -
Overcame them all,
(These aged ones)
In Victory.
Those marching feet
Echo like the beat of heart
Or wave,
Continuous, down each
Age -
Faces, bland,
Like gentle babies;
The only difference
Is in the line of hand,
Of wrinkle,
Vein -
Every skein
Tells a story -
Frail breastbones
Are weighted, borne down
With ribboned
Medals
Proudly worn;
Modestly produced
For mothballed suits...
Afterwards,
On this great Day,
Bands play
'Abide with Me -
Abide'.
They sit quietly,
Not speaking,
As the commentator
Makes a sensible
Summing up - Amen:
Melting back into the past,
There is nothing new
For them,
Who in peace and war
Have drunk deeply
From grief's cup -
They span so many years,
Some are over ninety;
But this holds
No fears -
There is no sign of
Senility
In the sagging chin
Line,
The tear that gleams
Under the lid;
In the bagging trouser
Seam -
Gently curving
As the gnarled oak
Bends its boughs
Under the storms.
