Added: (Tue Jul 28 2009)

Pressbox (Press Release) - This week sees the launch of handsets.eu, which provides a real time comparison pricing service across a selection of the largest mobile phone recycling companies for individuals wishing to sell and recycle their unwanted mobile phones.

Handsets.eu provides a free service for users to search for a specific mobile phone model and the handsets.eu site will provide real time prices from several different mobile phone recycling companies for the given mobile phone model. Users can then choose the preferred price they are prepared to sell the mobile phone for and go to the respective phone recycling company to begin the simple sales process.

It is estimated that there are approximately 80 million mobile phones sitting unused in UK households. This has led to the introduction of a new mobile phone industry phenomenon - phone recycling. A small number of companies will pay to buy your old mobile phones and recycle them by supplying them to other parts of the world, breaking the phones into component parts or disposing of the phones entirely in an environmentally friendly manner. The handsets.eu website collates the quotes from several of the largest phone recyclers in real time and supplies them in an intuitive and searchable fashion by phone model.

The number of mobile phones recycled in the UK is truly astounding. Individual mobile phone recycling companies are recycling in excess of 40,000 mobiles per month. When this figure is multiplied across the whole sector, one can see the popularity of phone recycling as a concept.

Research undertaken by handets.eu has uncovered some surprising anomalies when comparing the prices offered for specific mobile phone models for sale. The highest value quote for a phone model averaged across several providers is a massive £294.99 for the Apple iPhone 3GS 32GB. Interestingly the lowest quote for the phone when surveyed was £255, whilst the highest was £375. Using the handsets.eu price comparison tool could have increased someone’s sale price by £120 for a single phone. At the high end of the market, the top 10 highest value phones for resale across several of the largest providers, in first place is the Apple iPhone 3GS 32GB at £294.99 with tenth place taken by the Nokia 8800 Arte at an average sale price offered of £141.57. When taking the market as a whole, handsets.eu collated the data on nearly 7,500 phones quoted and discovered that the average price offered was £12.
