Pressbox (Press Release) - A dad-of-two from Buckinghamshire believes he was destined to re-write history with an absorbing debut novel set in the war-torn years of pre-Raj India.
Raphael Sohnn’s staggering epic, The Captains of Legend, has already earned five-star reviews from captivated readers.
The self-employed author admits his first book has been a long-time in the making as his initial chapters were interrupted by having a family.
Raphael, who writes every afternoon and proof-reads the following morning, said: “I began writing my first novel in my early 20s then stopped to have a family and work.
“Those early chapters were the essence of what was to become The Captains of Legend.
“I have been thinking of writing a story in a setting like this most of my adult life.
“From entering adulthood I felt it was something that I could and should do.”
Before the 16th century, when India fell under the rule of Mughal warlords, the country was divided into many independent Hindu and Muslim kingdoms.
It was a sub-continent where uprising and bloodshed were never too far away.
The Captains of Legend is set in the fictional kingdom of Bhagava which was being pulled unwillingly in different directions.
At the heart of Raphael’s sweeping novel are a coming-of-age princess and her childhood friend and trusted confidante.
The futures of Meena and Holasiyan are played out on a forever moving stage beset by war, feuds and sacrifices.
Raphael, who is now in his mid-40s, added: “To the best of my knowledge I am unaware of another story like The Captains of Legend.
“I wanted to base the book where and when I have, as I felt a story like this had yet to be told.
“It’s ultimately about two young people who grow up together and fall in love.
“The Captains of Legend didn’t require as much research as I feared at first. I was able to delve into my familiarity with Indian culture, current, traditional, as well as historical.
“The characters, who are entirely fictitious, are based in the fictional kingdom of Bhagava somewhere in what eventually became India around 400 to 500 hundred years ago.
“None of it is based on real events, although cultural references are made and implied.”
The Captains of Legend has been described as ‘absorbing’, ‘beautifully written’ and ‘knowledgeable’.
Despite the encouraging reception his first novel has received Raphael is still undecided about writing a direct sequel to The Captains of Legend, although a follow-up novel in a similar setting is being penned as we speak.
