Earl Biss paintings have done particularly well at auction houses over the last five years. The number of paintings being offered and the prices realized have seen a dramatic increase. An auction house will research the Earl Biss painting(s) you are considering consigning. They will provide a low to high estimate for the painting(s). This is the range at which the painting(s) are expected to sell based on past auction results of similar works by Earl Biss. Research past Earl Biss auction results of the auction house to determine whether they perform well in the sale of Earl Biss paintings. You can then establish a reserve for the Earl Biss painting(s) which is the amount below which you do not wish to sell the painting(s). A consignment agreement listing the paintings, detailing the estimates, reserves and commission will then be presented for signature by both parties.

When considering auction houses for the sale of Earl Biss painting(s), be sure to read their terms and conditions of consignment and sale. Auction houses will typically charge between five to twenty percent commission of the hammer price upon sale depending upon the number and / or value of the Earl Biss painting(s) you are consigning. Note that all auction houses charge a buyer’s premium on top of the hammer price which is a fee charged to the winning bidder. Payment to you the consignor is the hammer price upon sale less the auction house’s commission. You should also be aware of hidden fees charged by certain auction houses. These include handling fees, catalog or photography fees and buy in fees. Buy in fees is an amount the consignor must pay to have the Consignor’s Earl Biss painting(s) returned in the event they do no sell at auction. This is a tactic to entice the consignor to lower the reserve(s) to ensure the sale of the painting(s).

There are several reputable auction houses other than the large auction houses. With the internet even regional or smaller auction houses can successfully market your Earl Biss paintings to a large national and international audience. These auction houses can also provide a more personal auction consignment experience by dealing directly with the owners or managers of the auction house. They also often have lower fees and will consign Earl Biss works at no cost to the consignor.

As Earl Biss paintings continue to gain in value and popularity consigning a painting(s) for sale to an auction house should be a favorable experience.
