Former Yorks and Lincs police chief’s new book released

Added: (Wed Jun 28 2023)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Police chief turned author James Marchbank has returned with his long-awaited second volume of memoirs from the crime-cracking frontline.
The former Chief Superintendent released his first book, Police Commander in Yorkshire & Lincolnshire (Part One), to critical acclaim two years ago.
The warts-and-all insight into 1980s policing was described as a ‘great read’, ‘most enjoyable’ and as having ‘interesting anecdotes’ by captivated reviewers.
James has now released the follow-on volume, covering the second decade of his 30-year career in the force.
And again, Police Commander in Yorkshire & Lincolnshire (Part Two) has been met with critical acclaim and five-star reviews.
His second book is described as ‘a must for anyone with an interest in British policing’.
James said: “The second book allows me to discuss the five Chief Constables I worked with, as well as two major reorganisations of the force.
“As anyone who reads the book will see, I strongly support the view that there are good, bad and dodgy people in all walks of life, including the police.”
Yorkshire born and schooled; James graduated in law from Hull University.
But after earning a scholarship to the United States, his career path diverted towards tobacco picking, pizza deliveries and furniture removals.
He eventually joined the police after returning to his native Yorkshire, where he would enjoy a 30-year career, including 15 of them as a superintendent. He served throughout the Humberside Police area, specifically in Hull, Hessle, Cleethorpes and Scunthorpe.
James’ ability for storytelling brings his years in the police to life within both volumes of Police Commander in Yorkshire & Lincolnshire.
His progress through the ranks is a journey of humour, disappointments and surprises.
James added: “During my time as a senior officer I had to organise the policing of the first legal rave to take place in the north east.
“There were many ups and downs – ups include helping the force win a performance management award, and also becoming the first Director of Intelligence to come from outside the Metropolitan Police.”
Throughout Police Commander in Yorkshire & Lincolnshire (Part Two), James doesn’t hold back when it comes to his views on the direction policing is going in England.
He also casts doubt over data collection which shapes current policing.
Following his career in the force James enjoyed a spell with North Lincolnshire Council as a community safety officer.
He also spent around a decade in Cyprus after taking early retirement.

On top of his influential part in northern policing, James’ other claim to fame is an extra who appeared as a paper-chasing runner in the original Railway Children film from 1970.
