Pressbox (Press Release) - Explosive new Scottish writer Samantha Shiye isn’t pulling any punches with her gritty debut novel about sex trafficking.
The well-travelled author, who now lives in the Scottish Highlands, has released A Trade in Tears to a string of rave reviews.
Captivated critics have described her powerful novel as being a ‘great read’, ‘couldn’t put it down’, and ‘pretty brutal’.
A Trade in Tears follows the fortunes of four very different protagonists caught up in a gruesome series of sex crimes.
Samantha admits the inspiration for her first novel came from troubling revelations about criminals on the news.
She explained: “The idea for A Trade in Tears arose after I read of numerous ‘celebrities’ sponsoring and siding with the perpetrators of crimes and ignoring the suffering of the victims of criminal activities.
“In a small way, I hope this offering may redress the balance.
“The victims need support as much if not considerably more than the perpetrators.
“After all, few, if any, chose their fate to become a victim.”
Inspired by writers such as Edgar Allen Poe, Steig Larson and Yanis Varoufakis, Samantha has weaved together a highly engaging, and at times troubling, narrative through four different perspectives.
From the victims and investigating detectives to the partners and family members, A Trade in Tears provides a shocking insight of ordinary people pulled into the sex trade.
And she doesn’t hold back with graphic and alarming scenes of violence and rape.
A Trade in Tears is set around Brighton and the south coast of England, where she used to live, as well as the Home Counties and the Scottish Highlands.
Samantha’s passion for the written word stems from reading and writing to entertain her three younger siblings.
She explained: “As the eldest child in my family it was expected of me to entertain the others with stories both from books and my imagination.
“My siblings developed favourites amongst the stories I invented, so I had to keep track of them which I did by writing them down.
“Later in life, my family encouraged me to attempt publishing some of my efforts.”
Although there have already been calls for a sequel to A Trade in Tears, Samantha remains tight-lipped about her next project.
