Pressbox (Press Release) - A Yorkshire recluse is inviting readers into the darkest of places of the mind with his masterful first volume of poetry.
Former butcher Nigel Dalby has chosen a solitary existence due to his chronic insomnia and clinical depression.
But the father-of-three from near Huddersfield has used his time to reflect on a sometimes difficult life and also find solace in his poetry and faith.
Nigel has just released his first anthology, Darkness to Light, and he admits it should come with a health warning.
He said: “Darkness to Light is an eclectic mix of poems which are consumed with a theme of dark places, and strange creatures that dwell within the mind of the human being.
“It draws you into those places that most people fear to tread.
“And it highlights the primeval sense of early captions of our ancestors, and how we still have them hidden in the dark regions of our human conscience.
“This book is the start of entering into the dark places of this world and the creatures that live in the shadows.
“It is also my journey from childhood to present day, and the uphill battle of depression which as haunted me.”
The break-up of his parents led Nigel to first develop early depression in childhood.
And while the former cricketer and rugby player has continued to face deep moods along with sleeplessness, the ultimate message from Darkness to Light is that there is hope.
With masterful metaphors and original imagery as well as thought-provoking symbolism, his poems offer answers to the many questions his life has thrown up.
Nigel, who was inspired to write by M R James, added: “My poetry is strange and reflects a past that was an emotional roller coaster.
“Darkness to Light is a meditation of the mind and soul, leading us to God within.
“I discovered there is also as a lighter path where we see our creator in the beauty of landscape.
“And there is also a love which we all carry as human being, the love of romance and the spirit of love of the inner soul.”
