Islington publican’s memoirs are number 1 book hit

Added: (Fri Apr 19 2019)

Pressbox (Press Release) - A recently retired London Publican, who had also run pubs in Bristol, Brighton, Kingston Upon Thames and Lincoln, has served up his very own cocktail of humour and revelations to reach number one in the book charts.
Malcolm Mant pulled his final pint in Islington’s The Compton Arms last year to end three decades of owning and managing pubs.
Diaries that he’d kept since 2007 provided the foundations for his brilliantly observed debut book, 30 Years Behind Bars.
As well as reaching number one in Amazon’s memoirs chart, Malcolm’s brash biography has also been rewarded with entirely five-star reviews by readers.
The 49-year-old father of three said: “I started writing in diary form, attempting to detail what life was like trying to raise a family whilst living and working in a pub.
“I kept these extensive notes and when I sold my last pub in 2018, I took some time out in life to turn them into a book.
“I just felt that my perspective and view on life was a unique one, and one that others may find interesting.
“It was always an ambition of mine to write, so putting together a body of work like this and turn it into an actual book killed two birds with one stone.”
30 Years Behind Bars is a warts-and-all look at the colourful characters who often make their local their home.
The highs and lows of pub-life during forever changing times in the industry are brilliantly brought to life by Malcolm.
And there’s even a mention or two for some famous faces, including more recently One Direction, the Nolan Sisters and the Hairy Bikers.
He added: “For 30 years my view of life was from behind a ramp in that most British of institutions, serving people short and tall, black and white, good and evil, funny and sad, mundane and mad.
“My primary experience of this world has been shaped and influenced by alcohol through drinking it, selling it and observing thousands of others being affected by it in their own peculiar fashion.”
30 Years Behind Bars has been described as ‘honest, funny and informative’ by captivated readers as well as being ‘a wonderful insight’.
Since retiring as a publican last year Malcolm has begun working part-time as a tube driver on the London Underground.
As yet he has no plans for a second book – although he isn’t ruling it out.
