Lancashire writer earns high praise for spooky novels

Pressbox (Press Release) - With a view overlooking the site of one of the country’s most notorious witch trials, it’s hardly surprising new Lancashire author Eloise Keegan is rattling up five-star reviews with her frighteningly good supernatural novels.
Following the successful publication of Esme’s Journey in 2019, the 57-year-old has returned with another gripping Gothic page-turner.
Like her debut, the recently published Dead Man’s Wood has also attracted a string of compliments from critics.
Reviewers have described Eloise’s second novel as ‘awesome and surprising’, ‘delightful’ and ‘really enjoyable’.
Critic George Moughton stated: “Spooky Gothic noir at its very best.”
Eloise, who required a major organ transplant several years ago, admits her surroundings in the Ribble Valley have played a part in her storytelling.
The mother-of-three said: “I live in the Ribble Valley in Lancashire, sheltered beneath the backdrop of Pendle Hill.
“It’s an area haunted by spooks and witches, the unique surroundings inspire my imagination, allowing me to tune into the energies and ghosts of centuries past.
“The atmosphere around this wonderful area is blessed by tangible and mystical energies and is famous for the Pendle Witch Trials in 1612.”
Dean Man’s Wood follows Cassandra as she retreats from a turbulent relationship to the sleepy village of Whalley Dell.
With convincing characterisation and masterful imagery, Eloise soon draws readers behind the village’s innocent façade, and into the sinister world of the supernatural.
Centred around the Green Man ale house, friendships are formed and broken as spirits and humans play their part in Cassandra’s fate.
Eloise, who is inspired by authors such as Charles Dickens, Laura Purcell and James Herbert, added: “Cassandra buys a run-down cottage to renovate hoping to re-gain her confidence and trust in the world, ever since her ex-fiancé did what he did.
“Romance was the last thing on her mind, but she finds herself tangled up in a mystical web where things are not quite what they seem.
“With witches, ghosts and even the devil himself, can she ever find her true destiny and move on in her life?
“But more importantly, should we ever mess with fate?”
Encouraged by the reviews and reception for Dead Man’s Wood, Eloise is considering writing a sequel and, perhaps, even turning it into the first part of a series.
