Pressbox (Press Release) - Nobody can accuse champion caterer and food safety auditor, now as a new author, Kevin Shortland of not letting things simmer long enough.
The father-of-three from Norfolk has just published his first novel – following almost 40 years of jotting down story outlines.
His debut fantasy page-turner, Kevin Wilks and the Power Stone, has already received glowing reviews by captivated critics.
The 59-year-old, who has won accolades in catering and for best trainer in the food industry, now has plans for a further five novels in the series.
Kevin said: “I have always jotted down simple stories right from my secondary school days but never thought about getting anything published.
“Some teachers read them and gave them glowing reports, but I never thought of asking my parents to help get any of them printed.
“Some of the events in the books also go back to my schooldays, such as the football matches, and the friendship with some of the characters that feature.”
Kevin Wilks and the Power Stone follows the fortunes of a sceptical teenager who must come to terms with his wizardly abilities.
With encouragement from his older brother, Paul, and mentoring from a schoolteacher, protagonist Kevin accepts a magical quest that involves the greatest wizard of all, Merlin.
Many of the characters and events featured in Kevin Wilks and the Power Stone are based on real historical characters, places within countries and events that have taken place over hundreds of years.
Author Kevin’s gripping fantasy adventure debut showcases his masterful ability for characterisation, exciting plots and perfect pacing.
He said: “Kevin Wilks and the Power Stone is about a young teenager boy with a suspicious mind for everything he encounters.
“He has attitude and does not believe anything that anyone tells him without hard facts and evidence provided before him.
“Things start to change when his older brother, Paul, works out that Kevin also has the starting of magic powers he possesses.
“Mentored by a schoolteacher with a magic background who later finds out is a head of one of the magical houses that he knew nothing about, Kevin is sent on a quest to find six parts of a magical stone split back in the medieval era, for the great wizard Merlin.
“Kevin Wilks and the Power Stone is about a boy who has to accept that things thrust upon him, are about to change in a way he could never have imagined.”
Kevin is currently working on the sequel to his debut fantasy novel, with a further four instalments also in the pipeline. The second part of the story line being called The mirror of souls will be out later in the year.
