Wiltshire lawyer shares Moments in new poetry collection

Pressbox (Press Release) - Retired lawyer Duncan Reid is guilty of making readers cry, swoon and even look up their dictionary with his debut anthology of poems.
The 74-year-old from Wiltshire has just released Moments in Mishmash to critical acclaim.
With a 50-year career deal-making and in courtrooms, and enjoying two marriages – to the same woman – he has plenty experience to draw on for his thought-provoking reflections.
Duncan’s masterful collection of more than 30 poems is already being enjoyed by seasoned poetry lovers as well as novices to couplets and stanzas.
Duncan, who writes as D A Reid, said: “The collection is about the mixing - or mishmash - of memory and desire.
“Memories do appear to me as moments in the mind’s eye and are triggered by the unexpected – a piece of music, an overheard conversation, a smell, words on a page, and so on.
“Desire, whether of the moment or recalled in memory, seems like an unintended selection from the playlist of one’s life up to and including the present moment.
“Desire is always with us, dispensing pleasure and pain.
“I have had feedback from a few readers, discounting close relatives.
“One described the collection as ‘beautiful’, another said it made them cry, and another apparently had to keep a dictionary by their side.”
Subjects for Moments in Mishmash include falling in love, falling out of love, politics, pollution, philosophy and public figures.
Duncan, who is a father of two, also beautifully reminisces about parenthood and on his own childhood within the covers.
And his probing pen also ponders on interpretations of truth, and changing interactions brought on by the internet and social media.
Moments in Mishmash is an eclectic mix of delightfully presented poems that hold the attention for long after the pages have closed.
Duncan added: “Many of the poems concern themselves with recollections of events, in fictitious minds, of what was or what might have been.
“Others are focused on the times we have now and ask what moments from them is the reader to recall in future times as desirable or to be avoided and disclaimed.
“I hope that each poem opens up emotions or memories, and leaves room for the reader to choose his or her own interpretation of the issues and their value.”
Prior to retiring, Duncan worked as a commercial lawyer in Mid and North Wales and Shropshire before moving to Wiltshire some years ago, to write this book.
