Pressbox (Press Release) - It has taken early retirement for Worcestershire’s Allison Creal to break free from the constraints of web pages to publish her first novel.
The former website designer from Redditch has just released her debut thriller, Gleaners’ Moon to critical acclaim.
Allison’s gripping novel has been described by reviewers as an ‘excellent debut’, ‘cleverly plotted’ and ‘couldn’t put it down’.
The 60-year-old, who has enjoyed writing for more than two decades, admits it was retirement that gave her the time and creative freedom to bring Gleaners’ Moon to the bookshelves.
She said: “Early retirement set me free to write creatively and bring a whole story to life.
“I first started writing in my late 30s, but I only had enough spare time to dip in and out of it.
“Consequentially, anything I wrote back then was very disjointed.
“I used to work as a website designer, mostly in SEO, where the website content was always contrived to shoehorn in the required number of keywords.
“It was definitely not a creative process, as words were used simply as a tool to attract visitors to a website.
“It was only when I took early retirement in my early 50s that I had the luxury of being able to devote enough time to developing proper characters with a decent plotline.”
Gleaners’ Moon is an impressive debut which is unpredictable, perfectly paced, and packed with believably flawed characters.
Allison’s debut follows the fortunes of celebrity clairvoyant Cellestra Moon after her daughter is kidnapped by a gang wanting the winning numbers of a forthcoming lottery.
Gleaners’ Moon is a story of a woman who has the choice of trashing her own reputation or risking her child’s safety.
Allison, whose favourite authors include Agatha Christie, Martina Cole and Ann Cleeves, explained: “Gleaners’ Moon is about a celebrity clairvoyant called Cellestra Moon who, despite being a charlatan, is the country’s most adored television Medium.
“When her teenage daughter is abducted, the kidnapper demands Cellestra correctly predicts the winning numbers for the forthcoming lottery draw.
“If she is unable to forecast the numbers, then she must publicly admit she is a fraud.
“As Cellestra has no genuine spiritual ability, she is plunged into a no-win situation - either lose her reputation along with the vast psychic empire she has built or face tragic consequences with an inaccurate guess.”
Following the successful launch of Gleaners’ Moon, Allison is now working on two further novels featuring the detectives who investigate the kidnapping of Millie Moon, Detective Inspector Richens and Sergeant Duke.
Away from writing, Allison still has a fondness for rock music, having played bass in a band for more than 20 years.
