Yorkshire writer’s lockdown hobby turns into debut novel

Pressbox (Press Release) - Yorkshire’s Mohsin Ahmed was looking for a lockdown hobby when he embarked on writing his debut novel.
Some three years later the public sector worker has just released the highly-impressive No Need to Mention It to critical acclaim.
The imaginatively, fast-paced rom-com is quickly racking up a lengthy string of five-star reviews from captivated readers.
No Need to Mention It has been described as ‘excellent’, ‘kept me entertained’ and ‘the funniest book I have ever read’ by critics.
Mohsin, who cites J K Rowling as an inspiration, said: “During lockdown in 2020 I was thinking about what hobbies I could take up.
“I have always enjoyed comedy, and the idea came to me about a student who thinks he is a bit cleverer than what he actually is and ends up in funny situations.
“I just began to write and I formed the story as I went along - the only thing I knew was the ending of the book.
“The rest of the story came through as I wrote.”
No Need to Mention It follows the fortunes, or perhaps misfortunes, of Raheem as he enters the final year of his university studies.
With his concluding academic year looming, the attractive Veronica arrives in his life.
Despite his best intentions and sternest resistance, Mohsin’s protagonist finds himself with two girlfriends – and a whole lot of growing problems in trying to keep them apart.
The 30-year-old author’s ability for characterisation, comic pacing and story building lifts No Need to Mention It above most other rom-com novels.
Stories have always been on interest to Mohsin.
He explained: “For me, a great book needs to have an interesting plot, captivating dialogue and chemistry between the lead characters. I hope readers find that in my book.
“I have had feedback from friends that the sense of humour style is unique and they could have guessed I had written this book even if my name had not been on the front cover. That meant a lot to me, as I really wanted the writing style to be original.”
“In No Need to Mention It, each new revelation makes things worse for Raheem, and he becomes more irritated by the day.
“All hell will break loose if the truth is revealed - or can Raheem find a way in which there will be no need to mention it?”
Encouraged by the success of his lockdown hobby, Mohsin is currently plotting a sequel to No Need to Mention It.
