Color Doppler Ultrasound in Pregnancy
A Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic that uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to measure blood flow via your blood arteries by bouncing them off circulating red blood cells. A normal ultrasound produces an image by using sound waves, but it cannot show blood flow.
Many problems can be diagnosed using a Doppler ultrasonography, including:
i. Clots in the blood
ii. Valves in your leg veins that aren't working properly, causing blood or other fluids to pool in your legs (venous insufficiency)
iii. Congenital heart disease and heart valve defects
iv. An artery that is clogged (arterial occlusion)
v. Blood circulation in your legs is slowed (peripheral artery disease)
vi. Arteries that are swollen (aneurysms)
vii. Aortic constriction, such as in the neck (carotid artery stenosis)
A Doppler ultrasound can assess how rapidly blood flows by monitoring the rate of change in pitch (frequency). A technician trained in ultrasound imaging (sonographer) presses a small hand-held instrument (transducer) against your skin across the area of your body being checked, moving from one area to another as needed, during a Doppler ultrasound.
This test could replace more invasive procedures such as angiography. This procedure is injecting dye into blood vessels to make them visible on X-ray imaging.
A Doppler ultrasound test may also be used by your doctor to look for artery damage or to track the progress of certain vein and artery therapies.
