Pressbox (Press Release) - Antiviral research published by science direct in June 2020 on Ivermectin and the antiparasitic drug has shown highly promising results against COVID 19.

Ivermectin has multiple potentials effects to treat a wide number of diseases, It has antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-cancer properties and can be called a wonder drug. It is highly effective against many microorganisms including some viruses.

Highlights of the study are:
•Ivermectin is an inhibitor of the COVID-19 causative virus (SARS-CoV-2) in vitro.
•Asingle treatment is able to effect ~5000-fold reduction in virus at 48 h in cell culture.
•Ivermectin is FDA-approved for parasitic infections and therefore has a potential for repurposing.
•Ivermectin is widely available, due to its inclusion on the WHO model list of essential medicines

Studies revealed that ivermectin as a broad-spectrum drug with high lipid solubility possesses numerous effects on parasites, nematodes, arthropods, RNA viruses, flavivirus, mycobacteria, and mammals through a variety of mechanisms. In addition to having antiparasitic and antiviral effects, this drug also causes immunomodulation in the host.

The antiviral effects of ivermectin on RNA viruses
COVID-19

In a recent in vitro study, the Vero/hSLAM cells infected with the SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19 virus were exposed to 5 µM ivermectin in 48 h, and a 5000-fold reduction in viral RNA compared with control was found, The results showed that treatment with ivermectin effectively kills almost all viral particles within 48 h. The study was the first to assess the antiviral effect of ivermectin on COVID-19. The authors acknowledged that the drug may have antiviral effects by inhibiting the importin (IMP) α/β receptor, which is responsible for transmitting viral proteins into the host cell nucleus.

In addition to this a very new study conducted from May 2 to June 5, 2020, at the First Affiliated Hospital Xi’an Jiaotong University involving 116 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 has concluded that concerning treatment outcome, adverse effects, and safety, although both treatments regimes were effective in this study, the combination of Ivermectin with Doxycycline was superior to that of Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin therapy for the use in cases of mild to moderate infections.
