Surgery is a branch of medicine which mainly concerned with the treatment of injuries and various types of diseases and disorders by manual or instrumental means. Surgery is as old as humanity. In some ancient civilizations like in India, China, Egypt, Greece etc. surgery reached a very high level of development. The 20th and 21st centuries witnessed several new surgical technologies like lasers, endoscope, cryosurgery and many more. There are four major categories of surgery: 1) Wound treatment, 2) Reconstructive surgery, 3) Extirpative surgery and 4) Transplantation. Wound treatment is focused on good healing of wound avoiding infections. Reconstructive surgery mainly involves replacement of tissues which may be altered due to burns, fractures or degenerative-disease processes. The practice of plastic surgery and orthopedic surgery are well-known examples of reconstructive surgery. Grafts from the patient or from others are used to replace the lost or damaged tissues by the use of some artificial devices like prostheses. The use of metal in reconstructing hip joint and the use of plastic valves to replace heart valves are the common examples. In transplantation surgery an organ is transplanted from a donor to the recipient (patient) to replace the diseased organ. Eyes and kidneys are the most commonly transplanted organs. The major specialties in surgery involves general surgery, plastic surgery (cosmetic surgery), orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery, ophthalmology, bariatric surgery, gynecology, ENT surgery (otolaryngology) , colon and rectal surgery, thoracic surgery and urology.
General surgery is the parent specialty involving operations of breast, stomach, intestine, endocrine glands , blood vessels etc. Plastic surgery also known as cosmetic surgery is mainly concerned with the body surface. Neurosurgeons treat injuries of nerves or brain which may cause due to trauma. They can also remove brain tumors or treat the ruptured intervertebral disks that affect the spinal cord. Cardiovascular surgeons treat disorders of heart like heart blockage, improper action of heart valves, blockage of major blood vessels. Gynecologists operate to remove tumors from breast, uterus or ovaries, also remove blockage in fallopian tube. Thoracic surgeons treat lung disorders. Otolaryngology(ENT surgery) is concerned with the treatment of Ear, Nose and Throat disorders like tonsillitis. Colon and rectal surgery deals with the disorders of large intestine while urology surgery treats diseases of urinary tract and genital apparatus in males.
Now-a-days the technological developments and emerging cutting-edge skills help surgeons to operate patients smoothly and efficiently. For example laparoscopic surgery with the aid of a tiny camera (laparoscope) is frequently used to remove gallbladder stones efficiently and there are many more examples.
